Color basics

Green

A color of vegetation, renewal, poison, money, ecology, and unstable historic pigments.

Ancient onward Plants, copper compounds, minerals, synthetic pigments, light seed

What it is

Green is visually tied to plant life, but historically stable green pigments were not always easy or safe. It carries both natural and toxic associations.

Basics

  • Green is a primary in RGB light, but a mixed color in many pigment traditions.
  • Historic greens include verdigris, malachite, terre verte, Scheele’s green, and emerald green.
  • Green can signal life, nature, growth, safety, money, or poison.

Notes for later expansion

  • Later expansion should connect to verdigris and toxic industrial greens.
  • Green is useful for showing how screen brightness differs from pigment mixtures.
