What it is
Yellow is one of the most visible hues and one of the oldest pigment families through yellow ochres. It can feel radiant and joyful, but also cautionary or unstable depending on context.
Basics
- Yellow is a primary in CMY print and in traditional RYB/painterly systems.
- It has strong associations with sunlight, gold, attention, and warning signs.
- Yellow pigments range from ochres and orpiment to cadmium yellow and modern organic pigments.
Notes for later expansion
- Later expansion should distinguish yellow ochre, orpiment, lead-tin yellow, chrome yellow, and cadmium yellow.
- Yellow is important for the RYB/CMY wheel comparison because its spacing differs strongly between systems.
