Color concept

Color Constancy

The tendency to perceive object colors as relatively stable under changing light.

Core concept Color perception future

What it is

Color constancy is why a white sheet of paper can still look white in warm indoor light or cool daylight. The visual system interprets color in context rather than reading raw wavelengths directly.

Basics

  • Perceived color depends on surrounding colors and illumination.
  • Color constancy is useful but imperfect; it can create illusions and disagreements.
  • It matters for photography, product color, interiors, and visual design.

Notes for later expansion

  • Later expansion should connect to shadows, white balance, and color illusions.
