Color effect

Neon

A bright effect family around glowing signs, fluorescent materials, and high-energy design color.

20th century to digital culture Gas discharge, fluorescence, signage, high-chroma design seed

What it is

Neon can mean a real gas-discharge sign, but in everyday design language it also means colors that feel electric, glowing, fluorescent, and brighter than ordinary surface color.

Basics

  • Real neon signage uses gas discharge and glass tubes; different gases and coatings create different colors.
  • “Neon color” in fashion or design often means fluorescent or very high-chroma color, not necessarily actual neon gas.
  • Screens can simulate glow, but they cannot make printed neon brightness without fluorescent materials or special inks.

Notes for later expansion

  • Later expansion should separate neon gas, fluorescent pigment, LED signage, and digital glow effects.
  • Good cross-links: Light, RGB, Magenta, Cyan, Pink.
